letter to Telugu film dialogue writers and lyric writers
To the Telugu film dialogue writers and lyric writers,
This
is to convey that in the recent movies, the lyrics and dialogues
are mixed up too much with English words every here and there.
Please reduce this practice. I do not have to remind you that
Telugu language is beautiful and vast enough in itself to
express all that one has to.
I
understand that there are lot of English words usage in everyday
conversational language, especially in Urban areas and with
people living abroad. May be you (the dialogue writers and
lyricists) are trying to achieve the same effect in the movie.
Especially if the story is a urban based one, if you pay attention
to dialogues and lyrics, it is amazing to see how much we
are forgetting our language. It is my opinion that there is
no need to go overboard to achieve the originality of our
every day language. If using so much English is necessary,
then one can produce a movie like 'Mitr - My Friend' to be
enjoyed by everyone alike. I am not suggesting to go to the
extent of a mythological movie and have no English words at
all. Please use as many Telugu words as possible and try to
preserve the beauty of the language through your work. May
be this is a good way for the Telugu kids living all over
the world including Andhra, who do not get enough exposure
to Telugu, to get an essence of the language.
Telugu
cinema is the easy access to our language and culture to people
all over the world (Telugu and non-Telugu). So when a non-telugu
speaking person watches a Telugu movie (I am sure there are
people who do that), he sure will get a doubt if there is
no telugu word for the dialogue that was uttered in half Telugu
and half English. Recently, I started watching some Tamil
movies (new releases) - I do not understand Tamil, so I read
the subtitles. Do not get me wrong for comparing, but they
use lot less! English words in the dialogues when compared
to us.
It
is sad to see that English words have their place in songs
too. A lyric can never be as beautiful as it is in its original
form and not mixed up with English just because it seems to
come handy everywhere there is a difficulty to pen lyrics
with the right word.
This
is just my opinion and is not meant to hurt any body.
Regards,
Sneha
