After playing a tyrannical Bhallaladeva in the two-part monster hit Baahubali, Rana Daggubati is now set to play conqueror turned compassionate emperor Ashoka in cinematographer-turned-director Karthik Gattamneni’s Mirai. Eminent faces like Manchu Manoj, Shriya Saran and Kishore Tirumala are already a part of the film in addition to Hanuman fame Teja Sajja, who is playing the main lead. Rana’s inclusion now adds more star power to the film and the familiar name he is across Mumbai circles means the project can attract more eyeballs.
A source close to the development confirms, “In Mirai, which is close to 90 percent complete, Rana will be playing Ashoka the Great. It’s a crucial role in the context of the narrative as it is he who creates the nice sacred scriptures. The actor will shoot for his portions mid next month and with his part, the film’s shooting will be wrapped up. The makers are also planning to drop a brand new teaser shortly.”
Ashoka was Emperor of Magadha from c. 268 BCE until his death in 232 BCE, and the third ruler from the Mauryan dynasty. Moved by the death, destruction and human suffering in the Kalinga war in 265 BCE, he is believed to have embraced Buddhism and decided not to wage any war in future. From then onwards, the policy of Digvijaya (conquest of territory) was replaced by Dhamma Vijaya (conquest through dharma). His edicts encouraged the protection of animals, mercy for criminals, and tolerance of other religions. Ashoka ruled for over three decades and is best known for promoting Buddhism from a small sect into world religion.
Mirai is based on King Ashoka and his secret 9, with Teja playing a Super Yodha whose sole responsibility is to protect the nice sacred scriptures, whereas Manoj plays Black Sword, a skilled swordsman who is on a mission to take control of the nine scriptures that could transform a person into a God, setting the stage for an epic clash between good and evil.
Karthik Gattamneni has also penned the film’s screenplay alongside Manibabu Karanam, who worked on the former’s Eagle as well. TG Vishwa Prasad of People Media Factory is producing Mirai which is slotted for a release in 2D and 3D formats, in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, Marathi and Chinese languages, on August 1st later this year.

అశోకుడు, క్రీ.పూ. 268లో మగధ సామ్రాజ్యాన్ని పాలించిన మౌర్య వంశానికి చెందిన మూడవ రాజు. క్రీ.పూ. 265లో కలింగ యుద్ధంలో జరిగిన మానవ నష్టాలు, హింసను చూసి చలించి బౌద్ధమతాన్ని అంగీకరించి ఇకపై యుద్ధాలు చేయకుండా ధర్మ మార్గాన నడవాలని నిశ్చయించుకున్నాడు. అప్పటినుంచి అతని పాలన ‘దిగ్విజయం’ నుంచి ‘ధర్మ విజయం’గా మారింది. జంతువుల సంరక్షణ, నేరస్తుల పట్ల క్షమా భావం, మత సహిష్ణత వంటి విషయాలను అతని శాసనాలలో ప్రోత్సహించాడు. మూడు దశాబ్దాలకు పైగా పాలించిన అశోకుడు బౌద్ధమతాన్ని ఒక చిన్న సంఘం నుంచి ప్రపంచ మతంగా మార్చిన గొప్ప రాజుగా గుర్తించబడతాడు.
