Megastar Chiranjeevi on Saturday unveiled the trailer of his nephew Varun Tej-starrer Matka and it is a clear example of a talented filmmaker like Karuna Kumar leaping into big budget mainstream cinema with his fresh and unique approach.
The 2:30-minute trailer opens with flashes of Naveen Chandra, John Vijay and Nora Fatehi before we are introduced to Vasu (played by Varun Tej) whose journey from a young age to a matka king in Visakhapatnam forms the crux of the story. Vasu says his control over mind, heart and lust led him to where he is. He is into gambling and a character played by Naveen Chandra is in his hot pursuit. The latter believes gambling is more dangerous than drugs. “Once they get addicted to it, they won’t come out of it,” Naveen warns. While the trailer effectively balances revealing just enough to intrigue viewers, Vasu’s wife (Meenakshi Chaudhary) is unhappy over his overnight accumulation of hordes of wealth. But Vasu is determined to be the matka king. His transformation from a young guy with dreams in his eyes to a middle-aged man who doesn’t hesitate to take down his opponents with a gun is highly effective and Varun with his dialogue delivery and magnetic screen presence just brings the character alive.
Set between late 1950s and early 1980s, Matka trailer provides a tantalizing glimpse into the intense narrative, blending a historical backdrop with a gripping storyline. Vasu’s rise to unexpected wealth brings both fortune and peril, with the film promising to strike a delicate balance between success and danger, where the stakes are constantly on rise. The atmosphere is charged with intensity, mass elevations and a hint of intrigue, setting the tone for what is a riveting drama. While the background score by GV Prakash is thumping initially, it leaves a lot to be desired as it comes to an end.
A production venture of Vyra Entertainments in association with Rajani Talluri’s SRT Entertainments, Matka will be released in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi languages on November 14.
