About
Movie:
|
The movie is based on the Mumbai underworld. Raghu (Sanjay
Dutt) lives in a chawl with his parents (Shivaji Satam and
Reema Lagoo) and his brother Vijay (Mohnish Behl). Raghu is
not interested in studies and always hangs out with his friends.
Like all fathers Raghu's father keeps on telling him to settle
down and do something, either get a job or complete his studies.
Raghu requests his father to lend him money to open up a pav-bhaaji
stall that he'll run with his friends. His father agrees,
and Raghu starts working and making money. But life cannot
be fair... Raghu accidentally kills one of his customers in
a fight over an unpaid bill. That customer turns out to be
the brother of a gangster, so Raghu is running from the police
and the gangster. With the help of his friend (Deepak Tijori),
Raghu finds refuge under Vitthal Kaanya (Ashish Vidhyarthi);
a rival of the one Raghu is running from. Vitthal changes
the innocent chawl boy to a gangster. Babbanrao Kadam (Mohan
Joshi) is a corrupted minister and begins to use Raghu to
get rid of people that are a threat to his political career.
Raghu meanwhile, meets a prostitute Sonu (Namrata Shrirodhkar)
whom he later marries. Raghu has also got addicted to cocaine
and alcohol. Then the movie is how the innocent basti boy
gets peace in life.

This is probably the best role Sanjay Dutt has done in his entire
career. Before seeing Vaastav I was shocked to see the Sanjay
Dutt get the Filmfare '99 award. But after seeing movie there
is no wonder at all. He deserves it by all means. Paresh Rawal
is in a guest appearance as a broker that settles disputes between
rival gangs manages to make an impact. Reema Lagoo and Shivaji
Satam have given excellent performances as Raghu's parents.
Sanjay Narvekar (Dedfutia, Raghu's best friend) is pretty good.
Vaastav is different than all the films in its capacity of being
emotional and hard hitting at the same time. Some of the scenes
in movie are so very well directed that it makes you cry. For
example, Raghu's breakdown in his mother's arms as there's no
way out for him. It shows so nicely that inspite the gangster
stays above the law, how restless are they! In short Vaastav
has a good storyline, excellent direction and best performances
from each character, and most importantly Our Sanjay Dutt in
the cast.
Too good a movie. I was not a Sanjay Dutt fan at all before
seeing this movie but this movie has changed me. If you have
not seen it better see it soon. |
